When Dir en grey went out on the Family Values tour with Korn and the Deftones lats August, they were pleased and surprised by the response they got, Pleased because, even though they were toward the bottom of the bil and their US debut had barely been in stores three months when the tour started, the japanese quintet nonetheless drew enthusiastic fans every night.
And the sourprise? The fans were singing along.
In Japanese.
"It's very amusing that fans in America will sing along wwith our songs, even though the lyrics are in Japanese," says guitarist Kaoru, on speakerphone backstage with his bandmates after a New Year's eve show at Namba Hatch in Osaka. "Japanese is a very difficult language." (He and the rest of the band were speaking to Revolver through a translator.)
Of course, no one in Dr en grey imagines that the kids screaming along to "Beautiful Dirt" or "Kodoku ni shonsu, Yueni Kodoku" really understand what they're singing. Dir en grey's lyrics - the work of singer Kyo - arren't the sort of thing a fan could figure out in a few hours with a Japanese/English dictionary. Full of uncommon vocabulary and untranslatale punt, they're densely poetic and purposely open to multiple interpretations. As Kaoru admits, "Even Japanese find them confusing at times so it's probably very difficult for American fan to understand the lyrics. But it's great that they get so into the music that they make an effort to understand the lyrics." He adds, "Because of that, I dont think there in any real difference between the fans in Japan and the fans in America."
If that really is the case, Dir en grey ought to be pushing their wayinto the Billboard charts any day now. These goth rockers have been a major force in Japanese music for nearly a decade, since their second single the self-released "I'll" climbed to No.7 in the Oricon charts (the Japanese equivalent of Billboard). Back then, th only indie music that ever cracked the Japanese hit parade was teen dance pop [...]
